Aqil at 22nd KOLITA
In May 2024, I had the valuable opportunity to be one of the speakers at the 22nd Annual Linguistics Conference at Atma Jaya (KOLITA 22), hosted by Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. I presented my research focused on a corpus-based analysis of style-shifting and code-switching between African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and Standard English (SE).

My study explored how African American speakers shift between AAVE and SE in different contexts, examining the linguistic and social factors that contribute to these changes. Using the CORAAL Corpus (Corpus of Regional African American Language), I analyzed real interview data to compare structural patterns between both language styles.

KOLITA is a well-established conference attended by researchers from across Indonesia and beyond. It was not only an opportunity to share my research but also a rich learning experience. I connected with fellow researchers from various linguistic disciplines ranging from syntax, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, to applied linguistics which broadened my perspective and deepened my understanding of current trends and approaches in linguistic research.

Presenting at KOLITA helped reinforce my academic foundation while inspiring me to continue exploring English linguistics in both theoretical and applied contexts.
